How the silver price in New Zealand works
Silver is traded globally in US dollars. The silver price NZ buyers see is the international spot price converted into New Zealand dollars at the current NZD/USD exchange rate. Spot is the wholesale benchmark for one troy ounce of pure silver, and it changes continuously while global markets are open.
Because of the currency conversion, the NZD silver price moves with both the metal and the exchange rate. A weaker New Zealand dollar pushes the local silver price up even on days when silver is flat in US dollars.
What moves the silver price
Industrial demand. More than half of silver demand comes from industry, including solar panels, electronics, electric vehicles and medical uses. Economic growth and manufacturing activity feed directly into the price.
Investment demand. Silver is bought as a store of value alongside gold, so it responds to inflation, interest rates and market uncertainty.
The US dollar and the NZD. A weaker US dollar tends to lift silver globally, and the NZD/USD rate decides how that shows up in New Zealand.
Volatility. Silver is a smaller market than gold, so it usually moves further in percentage terms on any given day, both up and down.

The gold to silver ratio
The gold to silver ratio is the number of ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. Divide the gold spot price by the silver spot price to calculate it. Many stackers watch the ratio: a high ratio suggests silver is cheap relative to gold, and a low ratio suggests the opposite. Compare both on our gold price NZ page.
Spot price vs the price you pay
Physical silver sells for spot plus a premium, which covers refining, minting, packaging, freight and insurance. Silver's premium is higher as a percentage than gold's because silver is bulky and cheaper per ounce, so handling and shipping make up a bigger share of the cost. Larger bars, such as 1 kg bars, usually carry the lowest premium per ounce, while coins and small rounds carry more.
GST on silver in New Zealand
Investment-grade silver of at least 99.9% purity is exempt from GST in New Zealand. That is a major advantage for New Zealand buyers, as silver attracts VAT or GST in many other countries. Sterling silver and other lower-purity silver does attract GST.
