How the gold price in New Zealand works
Gold is traded globally in US dollars. The gold price NZ buyers see is that international spot price converted into New Zealand dollars at the current NZD/USD exchange rate. Spot is the wholesale benchmark for one troy ounce of pure gold, and it moves continuously while the London, New York and Asian markets are open.
Because of the currency conversion, the NZD gold price can move even when gold is flat in US dollars. A weaker New Zealand dollar lifts the local gold price, and a stronger dollar lowers it. For New Zealand investors this is part of gold's appeal: it tends to hold value when the kiwi dollar falls.
What moves the gold price
Interest rates and central banks. Gold pays no interest, so it usually strengthens when real interest rates fall and weakens when they rise. Decisions from the US Federal Reserve and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand both matter for the NZD price.
The US dollar and the NZD. A weaker US dollar tends to lift gold globally, while the NZD/USD rate decides how much of that move shows up in New Zealand.
Inflation and uncertainty. Investors buy gold as a store of value during inflation, market sell-offs, and geopolitical events.
Central bank buying and physical demand. Central banks, jewellery demand and investment bars and coins all add to the underlying demand for metal.
