White Cotton Handling Gloves

Soft white cotton gloves for handling coins and bars without leaving fingerprints. Available from Williams Bullion, New Zealand owned and based in Christchurch.

Skin carries oils, salt and moisture. On a proof or brilliant uncirculated surface a single fingerprint will etch in over months and cannot be removed without damaging the coin further, which is why cleaning a marked coin usually costs more value than the mark did. Gloves are the cheapest insurance in the hobby.

WHEN TO WEAR THEM

Always for proof coins, collectable strikes and anything in original mint packaging you intend to resell. Sealed assay cards and capsules do not need them. Plain cast bars are far more forgiving, though fingerprints will still show on a polished minted bar.

The other habit worth forming is holding a coin by its edge rather than its faces, gloves or not.
