THE STORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

The American Buffalo's design is one of the most celebrated in US coinage history. James Earle Fraser a student of legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens modelled the Native American portrait from composite sittings with three actual chiefs. The buffalo on the reverse was modelled from "Black Diamond," a bison that once lived at Central Park Zoo in New York.

This design first appeared on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, was retired in 1938, and returned triumphantly when the US Mint launched the Gold Buffalo in 2006 the first 24-karat gold coin ever struck by the US Mint. It was an immediate sensation.
