The 1kg Wall Street Mint Silver Cast Bar carries one of the more recognisable designs in the silver bar market: the Lower Manhattan skyline, set against the name of the world's best known financial district. Each bar holds one kilogram of .999 fine silver, equal to 32.15 troy ounces, and is produced by Scottsdale Mint.
The Wall Street Mint brand
Wall Street Mint bars first appeared in 2002, following the September 11 attacks in New York City, with the city skyline as the central design element. Modern releases continue that same design language.
Wall Street itself runs eight blocks through the Financial District in Lower Manhattan, and the name predates the United States. Under Dutch rule, when the settlement was still New Amsterdam, the street was known as de Waalstraat. The area has served as a trading and securities marketplace for centuries, and was the original site of Federal Hall, New York's first city hall.
The obverse design
The obverse carries the Wall Street skyline, dominated by 40 Wall Street. Completed in 1930 and standing 927 feet, it briefly held the title of tallest building in the world before the Chrysler Building overtook it. Surrounding the skyline are the Wall Street Mint name, the weight, purity and metal content, and a serial number unique to each bar.
The design also carries the Latin phrase Vivamus Moriendum Est, commonly attributed to the Roman philosopher Seneca and usually translated as "let us live, since we must die."
The reverse
The reverse is left in the standard cast finish. Cast bars are made by pouring molten silver into a mould rather than striking a blank under press, which gives each bar its own surface texture and slight variation in shape. No two are identical.
