The term sounds like slang, and it started that way, but a monster box is a specific thing: a sealed mint case holding a set number of tubes, bought and sold as a single sealed unit.
Where the term comes from
It originated with the United States Mint's American Silver Eagle. The Mint ships them in sealed green cases holding 500 coins, made up of 25 tubes of 20. Dealers called them monster boxes and the name stuck across the industry.
Other mints use their own case sizes and tube counts, so a monster box is not a universally fixed quantity. What is consistent is the idea: a sealed, full mint case rather than loose product.
Why buy a full case
Lower cost per unit. Buying a full sealed case is normally cheaper per coin or bar than buying tubes, which in turn is cheaper than buying singles. Handling and packaging costs are spread across the whole case.
The seal is worth something. An unopened case from the mint carries its own verification weight. Nobody has been through it, nothing has been swapped, and the contents have not been handled. That makes resale simpler.
Condition. Sealed tubes inside a sealed case means the pieces have not rubbed against each other, been fingerprinted, or been exposed to air. This matters more for copper, which oxidises readily, than for silver.
It is one transaction. Buying 500 pieces individually is 500 decisions. A case is one.
Leave it sealed
The most common mistake with a monster box is opening it to look inside.
Once the factory seal is broken it cannot be convincingly restored, and a dealer buying an opened case has to verify the contents rather than take the seal at face value. That means counting, checking and time, which can show up in the price offered.

Weight and storage
People consistently underestimate this.
A case of 500 troy ounce pieces contains 500 troy ounces of metal, which is a little over 15.5 kilograms before the packaging. That is a heavy, awkward object, and several of them together become a genuine structural question rather than a shelf you can use.
