Step 2: Choose between bars and coins
Bars generally carry a lower premium per ounce for the same weight of metal, which suits buyers focused purely on ounces. Coins from government mints cost a little more but are instantly recognised, which can make them easier to sell in small quantities later. Many first time buyers start with one ounce coins or bars and go from there.
Step 3: Understand the GST position

Step 4: Choose a dealer you can stand in front of
Buy from a dealer with a physical premises, published pricing and a clear buyback service, because how easily you can sell matters as much as how you buy.
