Why buy in person at all
Plenty of New Zealanders buy bullion online without incident. But the objection that comes up again and again in stacking circles is the same one: handing over a large sum and waiting for a courier to arrive with it. People want to see the metal, check it, and take it with them.
If you are in Christchurch or anywhere in the South Island, buying in person removes that entire category of worry. There is no dispatch window, no tracking number to refresh, and no question about what turned up in the box.
How an appointment works
Williams Bullion operates from a showroom at 124 Peterborough Street in the Christchurch central city, open seven days by appointment. Appointments rather than walk ins is deliberate: it means the metal you want to look at is on hand when you arrive, and that larger holdings can be arranged for viewing in advance rather than turning into a second trip.
Booking ahead also lets us confirm availability. Bullion stock moves, and a specific coin or bar listed this morning may not be there this afternoon.
What to bring
- Valid photo identification. Precious metal dealers have customer identification obligations, and you will be asked. A dealer who does not ask should concern you.
- Your payment method sorted in advance. Cash transactions of $10,000 or more are prohibited by law for precious metals, so anything at or above that needs bank transfer. We explain the rule in buying gold with cash in New Zealand.
- A sense of what you are after. Metal, format and budget. If you are undecided, that is fine — but it changes how long to allow.
What to actually check when it is in front of you
The advantage of buying in person is inspection, so use it:
- Stamped weight and purity. Confirm the piece says what the listing said — 999, 9999, the weight, the mint.
- Packaging integrity. Assay cards should be sealed and undamaged. Tubes should be intact with the correct count.
- Condition. Milk spots on silver and handling marks are cosmetic and normal, but you should be able to see them before you buy rather than after.
- The price against spot. Ask what the premium over spot is and why. Premiums vary by product, and a dealer should be able to explain the number without hesitation.
If you are outside Christchurch
The South Island does not have many bullion dealers, and a lot of buyers in Dunedin, Nelson, Timaru, Blenheim and Queenstown end up dealing with the North Island by courier. Both routes work. In person suits larger purchases, first purchases, and anyone who wants to establish a relationship with a dealer before committing serious money. Delivery suits routine top ups.
If you are making the trip, it is worth consolidating into one larger visit rather than several small ones, and worth calling ahead to confirm what is in stock that week.
Selling locally
Buying is only half of it. Having a dealer you can physically reach matters most at the other end of the trade, when you want to convert metal back to money without posting it anywhere.
